Art Doll Basics and Techniques

Are you willing to explore, play, experiment and learn about making art dolls for healing?

Whether you are just beginning or have made dolls before, it is immensely helpful to learn a variety of techniques for constructing art dolls. You will then be able to call on these skills and techniques when you dive deeper into the inner work of making healing art dolls. These techniques are the focus of this class series.

HEALING ART DOLL: A healing art doll symbolizes the maker's creative process. This includes the depth and power of story, thought, and emotion. The more thought, emotion and intuition that goes into the design and construction, the more likely there will be an evocative or provocative, powerful reaction felt by the maker and, in most cases, the viewer of the completed doll. Making a healing art doll for oneself can create a shift, transformation, or-yes-even some kind of healing as the maker defines it.  When a dollmaker shares a healing art doll with a group (witnessing), including the story and emotion behind it as well as the dollmaker’s process, this deepens the doll’s meaning and connection to the dollmaker and those in the group.

A maker of healing art doll is a person who:
  • is curious enough about the concept and wants to make healing dolls as a tool for healing and transformation.
  • is willing to explore, investigate and contemplate emotional expressions, beliefs, values, life events and experiences.
  • is willing to be vulnerable and play with her creative energies.
  • is willing to take creative risks and wonder more than try to fix.
​ Each class will cover a specific dollmaking subject and include:
  • an overview of the subject and skills
  • exploration of styles and themes
  • demonstrations and lessons
  • opportunities to create while on Zoom calls
  • an instructional video sent out every Wednesday to Facebook group
  • interaction via the private Facebook group to show your progress, get support, and ask questions.

  • NEW! Wednesday online 2-hour Open Studio twice a month.

  • Wrapping and draping
  • Basic shapes to use for dressing your doll
  • Putting costuming together, gluing, and sewing/stitching

#4 Adornment, Embellishment, Finishing and Showing
  • Embellish with things around home and garden
  • Deepen the meaning of the doll
  • Learn ways to display
  • Decorate the doll with your energy and symbols

If you cannot attend remotely, you will have access to the recordings for one year.
